thinking about texture generatively
Section I : Repertoires and Strategies
looking for models
a) pick 5 pieces (or movements from pieces) that are interesting to you (note, I am asking for 'interesting', not "good" or "that you like". We'll discuss the distinction). At least two Bagatelles and at least two from Casello's Op. 24.
b) for each example, respond to these questions/prompts
why is it interesting? ( logically it must be 'notable' or 'different' or 'exceptional' to be “interesting”)
how would you describe the character or mood? (I'll refer to this usually as a piece's affect'.)
how would you describe the rhythmic/metric organization of the piece?
how would you describe the harmony?
how would you describe texture/color
is there something aking to a theme? does there seem to be more than one if so, describe them?
(this is a strange question that we'll discuss) what are the topoi? what is its aboutness? what is its materiel?
After answering these questions RE-answer the question "why is it interesting?"
