Etude on 'Pymalion qui moult subtilz estoit'
This etude engages with a 15th century ballade from Cyprus as source material, sometimes presenting it directly and sometimes refracting it through modern compositional concerns. It explores the transformative relationship between past and present musical works, akin to the mythical story of Pygmalion's sculpted statue coming to life. Just as Pygmalion was changed by his creation, we are transformed by reinterpreting historical pieces. The past is made newly vibrant, while also accruing new resonances through time's passage.
