The Hunt by Night
The Hunt by Night has two origins - Paulo Uccello's 1470 painting depicting hunters poised before a forest, and Derek Mahon's 1970 poem exploring the historicity and symbolic meanings of the hunt. The musical work captures the anticipatory energy of Uccello's chaotic yet directed scene, while also engaging with Mahon's meditation on how the brutal necessity of the hunt transformed into a noble pastime and childhood game over time. Performed by the ensemble counter)induction, the piece shifts roles between pursuer and pursued, echoing the work's origins in visual art and poetry.
